This week..

— the kids and I battled mild COVID. This is our first documented time having it in our family though we suspect we had it last summer too. Cal had a few days of fever and was super clingy but that was probably the most symptomatic anyone was. A few Kleenex’s a day and everyone was good! We tried hard to avoid it the last few years due to risk of long-COVID and MISC risk for the kiddos.. but there is a sense of relief that the kids have had it and did great (their age group is still not eligible for vaccination).

— we ended our week coving the ER in Franklin. This time we stayed in what I would describe as a hunting cabin. It was on a beautiful piece of land but was the most basic of the places we have stayed. T had to kill a few hornets that made their way into the house but otherwise it was clean and functional. Elle brought some Barbie’s and Cal stays entertained getting in to everything. The weather was beautiful so we enjoyed the back patio and fire pit. Surprisingly, the kids enjoyed cold marshmallows more than s’mores. Elle’s scooter was a favorite as always. With the holiday weekend, I agreed to cover through Monday at 5pm so this is our longest shift to date. Only one more planned weekend of coverage and I’ve completed my commitment to the state for my loan repayment!

— Cal has new skills everyday. This week, he has mastered the pointer finger gesture and is quite the little communicator. He will whine or grunt and very skillfully point that little finger at what he wants. Gone are the days of guessing what food on the table he is most interested in! He also loves to put out that little finger and be held by a light switch so he can flip it off (but then you have to help him flip it back on). This weekend he let T know he wanted to go outside by enthusiastic points out the sliding patio door and then to T’s feet and T’s shoes. He can also communicate his frustrations, ha! He can throw little tantrums slapping both hands around or take an object and toss it across the room. The tantrum is brief and it’s hard not to giggle at how adorable his quick frustration is. Unfortunately, he will sometimes also bite if he is continually provoked (I’m looking at you big sister). Hopefully that part is a quick stage and doesn’t get him in trouble at daycare!

— Elle is more and more girl and less and less toddler. She cracks me up with her drama “but I ALWAYS _____” is her newest try at a rebuttal to a request. Often something like “but I ALWAYS eat ice cream before dinner”. Those whines are almost always completely factious but you can’t blame a girl for trying to push boundaries *just one more time*. In the car this weekend, she exclaimed “there is hair on my leg! Short little hairs! Not long ones like daddy’s. I wonder if there are hairs on my other leg?? There certainly are!! The sunlight makes my hairs glows Mom.” She was wondering around the rental property with T and there were some bones from an animal “Mom! I found a jaw bone! Eiiiither a dinosaur or a human.” she said so matter-of-fact. She later randomly said “I just love nature. There are so many things to look at!”  Dinosaurs are this week’s biggest interest. She found 2 animated shows that have been on repeat. The other night she was frustrated that she couldn’t remember what type of dinosaur was one of the characters. T and I named a few and she was quick to tell us that the tail was too long, etc. Thanks to google, we were able to sort it out and save the day. I brought a few ingredients to do a “science experiment” this weekend. Elle helped me mix everything to watch the reaction then questioned “Mom, why did you pick such a short one??”. This girl is going to be fun to raise!
