Tuesday, I interviewed for the final of the two accelerated programs. I ranked my preference between the two. I got the worst cold of my life. Then I waited for a phone call later in the week.. The result??
The Primary Care Program accepted me!
Do you know what that means?!
+ I am about to receive some excellent training!
+ I am about to receive some excellent training!
+ July 1st, instead of starting another rotation as a medical student, I'll be promoted to a sub-intern!
+ I'll have most of the perks of a resident physician (long white coat, meal card during call, etc).
+ I will not be paying tuition for a fourth year of medical school and I get a small living stipend this year!
+ This winter will not be filled with travels/interviews.
+ I don't have to fret about the match next March!
+ I have the possibility to spend the last two years in Grand Island (my dream plan!) where I will be one of the few training physicians in the city.
+ I could (but won't) change to a speciality of internal medicine after the first two years in the program. Until that point, all six of us receive the same training.

If you like visuals more than descriptions, here is a quick diagram I whipped up:
Line 1: the traditional route for residency
Line 2: the Omaha track
Line 3: the Rural Training Track
I'll being doing one the bottom two tracks. The $$ difference between this program and the traditional route is a savings of > $40,000. So yes, I'm pretty stoked about that part too.
I can't publish this post without saying that some excellent students that were not given this same opportunity. Between the two programs, there were just not enough spots for everyone who was interested out of my class. I recognize how blessed I am to be chosen for this program and I am excited to see where these friends do their training.
Meanwhile.. IT'S SPRING BREAK! We are already in the middle of a big (probably too big!) project that I'll fill you in on next week. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for all your love support during these crazy few weeks. I couldn't have done all of this without you all. Enjoy this upcoming week!
xo,
Krista
