M2- WEEK THIRTY FIVE

This school year is nearing the end.. which is just crazy! I can't believe how fast this semester has flown by. These next two weeks are going to be quite busy but I find it so much easier to be motivated for intense weeks when there is a break in sight! Now my med school friends are probably rolling their eyes because there isn't much of a break after this school year-- we jump right into studying for arguably one of the most important sets of boards of our lives. BUT, I am going to take at least a few days to do zero school stuff before I dive into that...

This was something "exciting" that happened this week:
I was studying in our living room with the window open when I heard a crunch. So, I glanced out the window and saw a truck backed into my car. My first reaction was to close my front door lol. I was embarrassed for him! I thought to myself, "ugh. this is going to be awkward. this dude's going to be frustrated that he made this silly mistake. how long should i wait before i walk out there..?" I had an inkling that I should write down his license plate so I peeked out our blinds and jotted it down quickly. Whatdaya know? Right after I wrote it down, the dude was gone. I waited a half hour.. surely he just didn't have a pen and paper to leave his information, right? Or he would contact the front office because they could tell him the owner of the vehicle? Nope. Thirty minutes later he's still not around and the office hasn't heard anything.

So, knowing I needed to file a police report (if I ever wanted it fixed), and knowing that I didn't want to make any drama, I tried calling the police department through one of their administration phone numbers I found online. No beans. (I'm telling this part of the story because I think some of you may get a chuckle out of how timid I was to contact the people who do this for their job. I totally felt like I was inconveniencing them...) The office worker told me I had to call 911. Blah. It felt really bizarre and dramatic to dial those numbers for such a little thing, but I did as I was told. Then that lead to some other shenannigans because we live so close to the river the 911 system thought I was in Council Bluffs.. so then I had to be transferred to Omaha's emergency response.. then they couldn't find my address so we ended up listing the intersection nearby. They sent a cop out to write up the report and I was so thankful I had the license plate! I couldn't answer hardly any of his questions about the model of the truck, who was driving, etc.. I didn't expect him to leave so I didn't study the scene! I thought the truck was navy and the cop sort of questioned my validity when it came back that the truck with those plates was black. Other than that he was super nice! I wanted to remind him that it's be proven over and over again that witness accounts are pretty useless anyway, but I kept my mouth shut :)

I guess it took a few phone calls from the accident investigation officer to wrap up the case because it wasn't the owner driving the truck. Plus, the driver admitted to being in our parking lot but he claims he didn't know he hit anything. That may be true, but that's a little embarrassing dude.. just sayin'.. The cop asked me if I wanted to testify in court to charge him with a hit and run.. I said no thanks. That was the right move.. right? That seemed pretty dramatic. The owner has insurance and the driver was registered on that policy too. So it's all good. I just need it fixed because, as you can see, I can't open my door far enough to use it! Don't worry! It's not slowing me down! I've been doing the passanger-side door-slide-accross :) Next, I may try the Nascar/Dukes of Hazard entrance:

Sorry, that was way more of the story than I planned to share. One last Krista quirk.. I totally changed my clothes before the cop came so I would look more legit lol. I thought the pony tail + stripes looked a little adolescent...

Other events this week:
+ Residency Symposium on Saturday- listened to a few speakers about the strategy of making yourself a good candidate and ranking schools for the match. We had breakout sessions in the afternoon where we were able to speaker to residency directors in small groups about their field. Nearly all of the information from the conference I knew (I am absolutely one of those people that over researches and over prepares for everything. I'll admit it) But I learned a few fun facts (for example, UNMCs Family Medicine Residency has a stellar call schedule!)
+ We are starting to transition to new leadership in the clubs at school so I've been provided lots of free food in exchange for attending meetings and either voting for new leadership or passing on the information on how I functioned in the position this past year
+ Primary Care Progress (a club I've been helping establish/promote at UNMC) held a viewing of the documentary Escape Fire. It is so good. Well, it's not good if you are someone who, for example, doesn't watch the evening news because it leaves you feeling down. No judgment. I totally get that. But if you are interested in understanding our screwy healthcare system and our culture surrounding it.. I highly recommend it.
+ We had a potluck dinner with our med school besties and checked out the art exhibit currently at the Winter Quarters Trail Center in town
+ This is sort of random.. but T has been trying a new (pretty intense!) medication regimen for his face and 4 weeks in, it is now making him super anemic. Why am I sharing? Because this week in school we were studying anemia so we picked up on his reaction fairly quickly. Kinda funny how those things work out. We went to urgent care last night to get a second opinion and they basically refused to see us telling us that they don't often see reactions to antibiotics. It was terrible healthcare. And terrible business! And talk about setting yourself up to be sued! They turned away a paying customer and gave medical advice after a 20 second conversation. Totally bizarre. We called his dermatologist on the way home (which was hard to get the courage to interrupt his weekend!) and he completely agreed and now T's on the up-and-up.

We are so thankful that this school year is nearing the end! Hopefully the weather will cooperate soon so we can spend more time outdoors! Enjoy your week!

xo,
Krista

  1. You changing your clothes to look more mature for the cop is awesome haha. I think I would have handled that situation the same way!
