-- all the buzz has been about the total lunar eclipse happening tomorrow as we live in the path of totality. The last total solar eclipse in Grand Island was April 1194 and the next one will be July 2744 (yes those date are correct!) though there will be one in May 2106 in another part of the state. So, definitely a rare event! No one really knows how much traffic to expect since there are definitely more well-known cities in the path (ex: Jackson Hole, Wyoming). You definitely can no longer find a hotel room or get a spot at the airport! Most medical clinics are closed for a majority of the day so the employees can enjoy the event. There are also only a few surgeries scheduled in the morning and some schools are cancelled. Unfortunately, the midwest is supposed to have partial cloud cover tomorrow so hopefully we will be able to see it!
-- I finished my rotation with ENT (ears, nose & throat). We spent each early morning between the hospital and the surgery center doing surgeries (tympanostomy tubes, thyroid surgeris, parathyroid surgeries, sinus surgeries, surgeries in conjunction with neurosurgery for parotid gland tumors, etc) and then spent 9-5 in clinic. It was only a 2-week rotation but it is extremely applicable to primary care and I learned a lot! This week, I start 2-weeks with ophthalmology (hopefully we won't see any retina injuries from looking at the eclipse without the proper eyewear!)
