I'm laying in bed with the window open enjoying a minute to "breathe". Except my sinuses are mad about all this spring pollen so I'll probably be shutting the window soon..
Life got super busy all at once! Many of our good friends & neighbors are moving in the next couple weeks.. we have cute newborn babies to meet.. this clerkship is more demanding then the last few.. and my refrigerator is pretty bare. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. Tomorrow I have a test in the afternoon with an actor patient - I'll be graded on how many of 218 physical exam steps I can remember. It will be nice to have that behind me!
It's funny how quick you adapt to an easier schedule! I'm not motivated enough yet for efficient studying... but I'll kick back in gear soon!
This past week (and the next two) go something like this:
8:00-12:00 -- see patients in clinic with one of the Internal Medicine staff
12:00-12:30 -- finish writing my notes to document the patients I saw
12:30-1:00 -- eat my lunch I packed
1:00-2:00 -- lecture! These lectures aren't passive like our first two years.. these are awesome clinical lecture topics but students are called on one by one to answer the questions - nerve wracking!
2:00-5:30ish -- small groups! A physician gives us the start to a scenario like, "a 48yo HIV+ man comes into the ER with a fever". Then the doc leaves us alone for a few minutes while we come up with a list of what we are worried it could be (including the "dangerous, cant miss" diagnoses and the "much more likely but less dangerous if we don't rule them out" diagnoses). We also make a list of the tests we would like to do and any medications or procedures that are needed right away. Then the doc will come back in the room and talk through our scenario. Sometimes he'll tell us we need to keep working, other times he gives us some test results from what we ordered. Sometimes he will ask us a list of questions to look up. It's pretty fast paced! I came home with a headache the first night lol.
6:00-10:00 -- steal a smooch from T, eat dinner, research objectives assigned in small group, and prep for the next day's questions in lecture!
That is what I have kept busy with!
That is what I have kept busy with!
But before I end this post.. my motto has always been that every post needs pictures - so I'll add a few from our Friday night! Wells Fargo has a bowling night each year that benefits Junior Achievement. So every year T raises money and we wear sweet matching shirts while we bowl. My personal goal was to break 100 each game - goal accomplished :D
Enjoy your upcoming week! I think I may have T talked in to buying us a new grill - wish me luck :)
xo,
Krista
