M3-- WEEK EIGHTEEN

I am totally distracted tonight.. so I apologize in advance if this post is a little all over the place..

This past week was week number one of pediatrics! I started in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Yeah, it was wild. I mean, PICU is always a little crazy but it was extra crazy to start with those very sick kids before starting with the sorta sick kiddos. Does that make sense? Jumping right into kids who have tubes and machines to breathe, we're circulating their blood for them outside of their body, and feeding them through another tube.. yeah that was a little complex. But I did really enjoy the medicine! There  were at least a handful of kiddos in the PICU that were there due to some super unique cardiac anomaly and they are undergoing a series of surgeries with the hope of living a few more months. It was very interesting to look at their imaging and think through how successful/unsuccessful their system would be at circulating & oxygenating blood and how surgery could possibly enhance their system. I like cardiology! I also enjoyed the opportunity to think through some of the ethical dilemmas that arise in pediatrics and hear some of the discussions with parents working to make these huge decisions. Halloween was also fun at Children's! Of all the costumes between staff and patients, my favorite was a patient in something similar to this:

- sweet & simple -
The hours were similar (or a little better) to other rotations this year: 0600 to 1600/1700.. but this week I was tired. I think the crazy pace of surgery and then being away from 2 months sort of caught up with me. I went to be at like 2000 or 2100 a couple times this week! It is starting to get a little tiring to switch to a new team every week. It's great to have so much exposure.. but it is a lot of getting-to-know-you and formalities. I think I'll have a better attitude here soon.. pediatrics is great because they give you the weekends off! I think a few more quiet minutes at home and dates with T and I'll be back to full-strength :)

What else.. ?

I am still changing my mind about hourly on whether to specialize in pediatrics or family medicine. I'm to the point where I just laugh about it. I'll be dead certain one way or another.. just so sure that I've made my decision.. and then later that day change my mind without even running the pros/cons or speaking to anyone! It's a win either way.. so maybe I'll just let things work themselves out :)

Oh! T has some pictures he wants to share from the Husker game on Saturday. His friend was given tickets from his professor so T and his friend sat front row. Right in front of the miracle game winning catch. Probably the highlight of T's year.. And! I got to spend some time with our friend's wife and cute kiddo at the Gardens and the Zoo.. a win for both of us!

I am going to use this week to get organized for this new rotation and catch up on sleep! The one benefit to the sun setting in the early evening.. maybe it will help me go to bed earlier! On to NICU @ UNMC this week! (Then after that I finally get to learn about the normal-sick kiddos..)

Have a great week!

xo,
Krista
