HO3-- WEEK 24

The house I stayed in this weekend for work. Primary Care isn't always glamorous but I'm happy to do it!
This week..
-- T and I both got gross colds. I can't remember a time when we each took a sick day from work but it was necessary! T got the worst of it but thankfully we are both on the mend!
-- was my turn to be the on-call doctor in the ER! This is the first time I've had a 72 hour (marathon!) shift so it was a new experience for me. Often, in Omaha or Grand Island I'll be awake all or most of my 24 hour shift, however, with this longer shift, I had to be really careful to sleep when I had the chance! I was super intimidated to try being the doc because typically when I am on-call there are ER physicians so I am only called in for patients that need to stay in the hospital. I am very comfortable with sick patients - but I was really nervous to be the one to do all the stitches, sprains/fractures, foreign bodies eyes, etc. It's also a different experience not having specialists at the hospital and deciding who needs transferred to the larger hospitals nearby for their services. I had a wide variety of patients this weekend and slept only in few-hour segments but it was a great experience! The house the hospital owns for us to stay in is definitely not glamorous ("central" heat added so vents only in the living room, carpet in the kitchen, zero art on any of the walls, and lace window coverings that may be as old as the house) but it was nice to escape from the hospital from time to time! Unfortunately, I had an overdose come in to the ER 20 minutes before the Women's Volleyball National Championship that I didn't have ready for discharge until after the Huskers won - but I caught score updates on the TV in the waiting room throughout the game!
